TENNIS DOUBLES - Here is Myth number 4!
"The Best Return Is Deep & Crosscourt"
Here is another misconception.
People hear so much about depth that they think that it applies to all situations.
It may well be a good rule for singles but for doubles it can land you in big trouble.
Check out the video (in full screen if possible) and look at the shaded areas I've set out to illustrate this point.
Basically, returning deep and cross court means that the ball you hit must travel high and over the centre of the net.
This is often/should be perfect for the poacher if they are active and motivated.
Hitting some of your returns low and angled does several things.
1. It takes the hungry poacher out of the game.
2. It moves the receiver out wide.
3. It brings your partner more into the game in an attacking sense.
4. It widens the gap between your opponents which you can then exploit.
So, think again when assuming deep & cross court is always your best returning option.
