Before you carry on.........I want to be honest with you.
I hadn't planned to do a doubles training program, but having decided to get back into some sort of competitive play (in order to encourage my son to play more), I found myself playing doubles for my local club.
And then it hit me!
I Was STUNNED...
Hardly anyone knew how to play doubles!!
Now obviously people were playing, but it was more like four singles players on the court "playing" at playing doubles.

Yes, it was all my fault that I
expected them to suddenly slot into playing a game that I had spent
years learning.
Yes, it was all my fault for getting
angry because they didn't do the things I expected them to.
Thankfully, the team had become buddies
off the court and so bringing up my frustrations wasn't a huge deal
(especially because I bought the drinks).
In fact, they told me that one of the reasons they had asked me to play
was that they were hoping that I could show them some "moves"
as they called them and make things better.
Ok, YES I had played some doubles to 1st team level, played
with the Full time squads I had worked with and Won Some (County/State)
Tournaments along the way, but I hadn't banked on ending up
taking the lead with a bunch of players at my local club.
After all, I was only using the opportunity
to play for the club as a way to encourage my 5 year old son to play
more.
But, we went to the courts (as a team) 1-2 times per week or so and
I showed them some of the basic doubles "moves".
At first, things were a bit sticky as you can imagine, but what started
to happen was that everybody started to "see" the game of
doubles.
Their mindset changed as the phrase I kept
reciting to them made more sense.

The "singles" errors
I kept telling them about started to dissapear and solid doubles play
began to emerge.
AFTER 2 WEEKS
OF STARTING THE TENNIS DOUBLES MAKEOVER.....
We arranged some practise matches with
some of the other players down at the club.
There were some serious players involved.
But, the boys and girls done great.
They did so well in fact, that we won the
arranged match 7 sets to 2 (3 pairs per team playing 3 sets to a match)
Ok, it's difficult to say what would have happened before we started
the "training" but perhaps the best indication about the changes
came from our opposition.
They
all said they couldn't believe the changes.
Not in terms of BIG shots
that blew them off court.......in fact it was the opposite.
It was the lack of BIG shots but the UPTURN in organization that they couldn't
handle................and that was music to my ears!
The Guys were happy, because they had transformed their
doubles game.
The
Girls were happy because they were no longer "stuck"
with the traditional ladies doubles game of trading groundstrokes from
the baseline all day.
Both
things had been acheived not by adding loads of new shots, but by understanding
what to do with the shots they already had.
The even better news was that as we got used to practising this way
(1 x per week), the matches became easier.
We
went from winning (and losing) matches 7-5's and 7-6's to CRUISING past opponents 6-2's and 6-3's.
